Since receiving his master’s degree at the Tokyo Metropolitan University in 2006, Japanese designer Akiyuki Sasaki, with a passion for the Chinese culture, has been traveling frequently between Japan and China to work on product and spatial design for some of the best-known Japanese brands. In 2010, Akiyuki won the Kids Design Award for his SAUTO furniture line under ACTUS. In 2015, Akiyuki launched IKASAS, his own label of original furniture based on decade-long design practice, whose ethos of “Complexity in Brevity ” imbues contemporary furniture presentations with the Zen and elegance of oriental aesthetics.
Recognizing the diversity of modern-day living, people no longer define the construct of their living space with labels tied to any particular décor, place or time, or in a monochromatic style. Rather they look for living spaces that are both delightful and different that incorporate myriads of cultural and design elements across time and space.
Each piece of Akiyuki’s design embodies his observation of and unique perspective on everyday life and finds the balance between consistency and variation. All his works stand by his design philosophy of “intelligent pursuit of trends, timeless creative and endurable quality”.
To meet increasingly sophisticated aesthetic and quality needs, furniture is no longer made to serve purely functional purposes. At IKASAS, each process from design to craftsmanship to packaging, distribution and logistics focuses on reducing the environmental footprint and health impact. To maintain uncompromised Japanese flavor and quality, IKASAS fabricates from FAS-class timber imported directly from the US at its wholly Japanese-owned facility with 30 years of manufacturing experience in full compliance with the Japanese environmental standards.
